International Cooperation

For many years RIR has been closely interrelating with multiple organizations from foreign countries and former Soviet republics. The results of research work undertaken by the scientists of the Institute over the period 1991-2010, including international projects within the framework of CEC and CIS agreements, were highly evaluated by international scientific community. The objectives of the projects were defined according to the post-Chernobyl related issues. During this period RIR participated in eight important projects, including ЕСР-2, REDUP, RECAVER, PHYTOR, TACIS, the Healthy Family Project, Franco-German Initiative, Area-Based Development of the Chernobyl-Affected Areas of Belarus, and others.
In implementing numerous international projects in Brest, Gomel and Mogilyov regions RIR has been cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the French Nuclear Protection Evaluation Centre (CEPN), the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA), the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), UN/UNDP office in the Republic of Belarus, and other institutions.
RIR research fellows are regularly awarded IAEA fellowships and undergo training courses in scientific centers of USA, Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Russian Federation and Ukraine.
Since 2002 the Research Institute of Radiology has been solving the problems of contaminated area rehabilitation in cooperation with Russian Federation. Together with the All-Russian Research Institute of Agricultural Radiology and Agroecology and the Institute for the Safe Development of Nuclear Power of the Russian Academy of Sciences the Institute was assigned to provide information and technical support of joined activities on mitigating the consequences of the Chernobyl accident in the frame of the Union State Program.
The dominant idea of this cooperation was to form and improve a joint Belarus-Russian policy in the sphere of rehabilitation of con-taminated territories and affected inhabitants for the period 2006-2010, and to grant its practical application.
Fundamental principles of the joint agreement are stated in the "Program of the Union State of Russia and Belarus joint activities on minimization and overcoming the Chernobyl catastrophe consequences".
Within the frames of the accomplished Program the Research Institute of Radiology was responsible for:
• Creation of the unified elements of the radiation monitoring system for agroindustrial production sector;
• Application of up-to-date experience in the sphere of accident management and contaminated land remediation;
• Development and implementation of a long-term information and social rehabilitation program based on a single unified databank;
• Improvement of collaboration and coordination mechanisms of joint activities on implementation of a unified information and social rehabilitation policy, development of a unified system of expert medical care to CIS citizens who had suffered in the result of Chernobyl accident.
New developments:
Process and project documentation, recommendations and guidelines on production of clean and competitive horse meat in agricultural enterprises located on radionuclide-contaminated territories;
• Process and project documentation, recommendations and guidelines on the long-term use of ferrocene mixtures and fodder additives ("Vitamid", "Anticet") in agricultural enterprises located on radionuclide-contaminated territories to obtain clean (according to the RPL standards) and marketable animal production;
• Technical documentation package on establishment of optimum fodder supplies for livestock on radionuclide- contaminated territories;
• Improved guidelines for maize cultivation on radionuclide-contaminated territories;
• Scope of dose reduction measures for the populated area where the mean effective radiation dose may exceed 1 mSv/year;
• Scientific support provided to the land re-use process in Kostyukovichi district of Mogilyov Region;
